There is a large group that is responsible for more death than just about any other over the last half century.
Environmentalists.
This should come as no surprise because population reduction is one of their goals.
Nearly every action they get gullible politicians to go along with results in more human death. This fact is undeniable. And the science backs this up.
From CAFE fuel economy standards to the DDT ban, millions of lives have been sacrificed at the alter of environmentalist.
One study found that CAFE had cause more than 46,000 deaths in automobile accidents. 46,000 live that would not have been lost had they been in larger, non-CAFE vehicles.
DDT, that has never been proven to cause any harm to animals or humans, saved millions of lives that might otherwise have been lost to malaria and other mosquito born diseases. The resultant increase in population was a lament of the environmentalist movement. This fact is also well documented. There response was to make up scientific sounding lies to push a DDT ban and thus undo the gains of DDT.
Today, there is much in the press about reducing the spread of mosquito born diseases (MBD) in Africa. Yet the only solution offered is mosquito nets for beds. DDT is an inexpensive, effective, and safe means of dealing with MBD's but that would result in increased population in a region that is already being starved to death by their own governments.
If environmentalists really believe that the human population is the problem, they should start practicing what they preach and commit suicide.

What total balderdash!
You assume that everyone who dies in an auto accident could have been saved by a larger vehicle. What about the 20,000 or so deaths in SUVs? You assume everybody could afford a larger vehicle. You assume that CAFE standards drive smaller vehicles instead of greater effieciency in engines (the 4-cylinder Camry I drive to day is larger and safer than the 6-cylinder Oldsmobile Cutlass I used to drive).
And DDT being harmless? Heck, nobody with any experience claims that. DDT is a deadly poison, a carcinogen in animals and strongly suspected human carcinogen -- and among its worst sins, it is a long-lived, endocrine disrupter in the wild (which is what nearly killed off the eagles and other raptors).
We have alternatives to DDT, but nothing works when governments do not follow through on anti-malaria campaigns, and when there are no hospitals to treat people who get the disease (not even DDT is 100% effective).
Bed nets work well, by the way. DDT doesn't work in all places, it is particularly ineffective against the mosquitoes that carry the worst forms of malaria.
Environmentalists believe humans should use reason to come up with good, workable, sustainable solutions. DDT is not a good solution, it's not very workable (a lot of people don't like to have their houses sprayed with any poisons), and it's far from sustainable. Plus, DDT does a lot of damage once released in the wild -- ironically it kills many of the predators of mosquitoes, which means the pests come back with a vengeance.
There are better solutions.
There have been no peer reviewed and repeated studies that prove DDT is harmful when used properly. There are, however, many studies that prove it is safe and effective.
As for SUV's the whole reason they are so popular today is because CAFE killed the family station wagon. We have a station wagon that could fit a 4X8 sheet of plywood in the back for dump trips. and could carry 5 children, the parents, and stuff for a family trip. These vehicles do not exist today.
CAFE forces lighter, smaller vehicles. Some sates have gone further and banned passenger diesel cars. In MA I can not buy a diesel Jetta of Diesel Jeep Liberty new. I am limited, if I so choose, to expensive hybrids that have very high maintenance costs.
Environmentalists admit loving the human death side effect of their actions! They are condemned by their own words.
